Understanding Victorian Year 7 academic scholarships

A useful starting point is the entry year: when your child would begin Year 7. Applications and assessments may take place well before then. Compare the current school instructions rather than assuming every school follows the same timetable.

Start with the opportunity

Check that the scholarship includes Year 7 and the intake you need. Academic, music, general excellence and financial-assistance awards can have different eligibility rules and selection processes at the same school.

Compare what matters

  • Award: what the scholarship covers, how long it lasts and its continuation conditions.
  • Application cost: school and assessment charges, including any conditional charges before an offer. “Not confirmed” does not mean free.
  • Dates: the application deadline and each assessment stage.
  • Assessment: who administers it, where it takes place and whether further testing or interviews follow.
  • Campus: where the student would attend. The test venue may be elsewhere.

Read each stage separately

An assessment provider’s name is useful context, but it does not describe the complete school selection process. Haileybury’s published Year 7 process, for example, includes initial online testing and mandatory second-round testing for shortlisted applicants at their nominated campus.
